Thailand: Political Unrest Continues to Roil Bangkok

Anti-government protests that have been ongoing for months demanding the resignation of the prime minister escalated into overnight clashes between anti-government and pro-government groups Sept. 1. The government declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, while Singapore and South Korea urged against any travel to Thailand and the U.S. State Department warned of the potential for violence. Trade unions then threatened transit strikes to join the protests. In the days before the emergency declaration the rallies spread to the popular tourist areas of the Andaman coast and forced the closure of three airports, including Phuket, Krabi and Hat Yai, stranding thousands of tourists, some for four days.
