Cambodia and Thailand: Border Dispute Still Simmers

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 22nd, 2008 | Trackback

A simmering border dispute flared into a military clash Oct. 15 in the area of the Preah Vihear temple, known as Khao Phra Wihan in Thailand. The region is in Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand’s Sisaket province. Additional border disputes exist in at least two other sites, Prasart Ta Moan and Prasart Ta Krabey, where authorities have closed off access to temples from the Thai side. Travelers should avoid these areas until the situation is resolved. Tensions have been diminishing since the armed conflict, and the prime ministers from both countries were planning to meet to discuss the situation at the Asia-Europe Summit in Beijing Oct. 24.
