China: Beijing to Reinstate Olympics Anti-Pollution Measures
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |One positive result of the Beijing Olympics is the city’s decision to reinstate anti-pollution measures it used during the games if pollution reaches extreme levels. Half of the city’s vehicles will be banned on alternate days depending on whether their license plates bear odd or even numbers, factories will be shut down and construction projects will be suspended. The August pollution levels were the lowest in Beijing in 10 years and residents and authorities would like to see similar levels more often. In addition, authorities took almost a third of government vehicles off the streets in October and for a six-month trial will ban all vehicles from the roads one day a week based on license numbers.
