Dubai: Two Britons Sentenced to Jail for Sex on the Beach

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 22nd, 2008 | Trackback

It may appear that anything goes in the high-flying state of Dubai, but that is not so, as two Britons discovered recently when a Dubai court sentenced them to three months in prison followed by deportation for engaging in sex on a public beach. The law in the United Arab Emirates, of which Dubai is a member state, calls for a maximum sentence of one year for sex outside of marriage and the same for committing an indecent act in public. The defense lawyer vowed to appeal the conviction but the prosecutor in turn suggested he would appeal the light sentence. Whether the case goes to appeal or is now settled, the same lesson applies: travelers are subject to the laws of countries they visit and should not be cavalier about breaking them because they are likely to be enforced.
