Ecuador: National Police Increase Presence to Combat Crime across the Country

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 29th, 2008 | Trackback

Violent crime has increased throughout the country, and in response to it and citizen protests demanding action, the national police recently launched an emergency operations plan to combat crime by increasing the federal police presence in each of the country’s 24 provinces. Travelers can expect more police checkpoints throughout the country and should always carry required documents while driving. These include a passport, driver’s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and license plates. In other news, the U.S. Embassy in Quito warned travelers that criminals especially target people using ATMs and other services at local banks, so visitors should avoid withdrawing large sums of money and should use ATMs in well-traveled areas such as shopping malls because they are safer than ATMs on the street.
