Honduras: Heavy Rains Cause National Emergency
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Continual heavy rain has created severe flooding and landslides throughout the country, prompting the government to declare a national state of emergency and the Disaster Response Office to call a “red alert” in many areas. Towns and cities affected include El Progreso, Santa Rita, El Negrito, Tela, the department of Comayagua, Corquín and other areas in the department of Copan. The popular Bay Islands are not affected. Some 200,000 people have been displaced and 11 killed. Hurricane seasons lasts until the end of November, so further rain is likely.
