India: Goa Most Expensive Place for Tourists; Caution Advised for Kolkata and Mumbai

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 9th, 2008 | Trackback

Goa is now the most expensive place in India for tourists and remains popular despite recent high-profile cases of sexual assaults, the murder of a British teenager, and the killing of an Australian tourist in an argument with a waiter over how a beer should be served. As the October-March tourist season got under way, authorities announced plans to crack down on alcohol and drug abuse and loud music at beach huts, vowing to control crime and rebuild the state’s reputation as a safe destination. In other news, the U.S. State Department advised Americans in Kolkata and Mumbai to remain vigilant during the holiday season that runs from October with Diwali celebrations through Christmas and New Year’s because the holidays often bring a rise in crime.
