India: Private Delhi Airport Taxis Still Dangerous
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Seven months ago Delhi airport authorities rearranged the prepaid taxi system to crack down on illegal taxis and touts preying on unsuspecting tourists. The plan was to eliminate the touts and reduce crime, from simple tourist rip-offs to abductions and robberies. But the situation has improved only slightly, with officers unable to patrol adequately at peak times and the majority of international arrivals being unaware of the prepaid system or the notion that taxis not in the prepaid taxi line may be unsafe. The issue is important because violent crimes do happen: a Saudi businessman took a private taxi Oct. 10 from outside the domestic terminal and was abducted, robbed and murdered by a team of three, all of whom are now in police custody.
