Thailand: Political Unrest Worst in 16 Years

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | October 9th, 2008 | Trackback

Bangkok’s worst street violence in 16 years erupted Oct. 7 when riot police fired teargas canisters and stun grenades into crowds of anti-government protesters. Two people were killed and more than 400 were injured. Protesters vowed to continue their campaign to bring down the prime minister, who is the brother-in-law of disgraced and exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The protests have been ongoing for four months, and the current escalation of violence has hurt the business climate and may further erode tourism.
