Cambodia: Security Increased for Independence Day, Water Festival
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Ten thousand security personnel will patrol the streets of Phnom Penh to keep order on Independence Day Nov. 9 and during Bun Om Tuk, the annual Water Festival that runs Nov. 10-13. The festival is so popular that as many as 4 million Cambodians are expected to flock to the capital city to take part in the festivities, crowding the narrow riverfront for three days of boat races. Most of the riverfront will be closed to traffic during the festival and officers will be concentrated in areas where large crowds are expected, including Independence Monument, Sothearos Boulevard, the park in front of the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom. The U.S. Embassy has already received reports of an increase in street crime and expects this trend to continue throughout the festival as criminals take advantage of the large crowd.
