Ecuador: Beware Yellow Taxis in Urdesa Neighborhood of Guayaquil

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 6th, 2008 | Trackback

Several U.S. citizens have been robbed recently in express kidnappings in the Urdesa neighborhood of Guayaquil. Victims have hailed yellow taxis outside popular restaurants and been threatened with guns by drivers and their accomplices, then driven from ATM to ATM to withdraw money. In all incidents the victims have been in groups of three or more, and all have been released unharmed, after several hours, except for minor injuries after being struck with guns. The U.S. Consulate in Guayaquil has had no reports of such assaults occurring when passengers ordered taxis by phone. The consulate further advises passengers who must hail a taxi on the street to send a text message to a family member or friend noting the taxi’s make, model and license number before getting in. If you do become a victim, do not resist.
