India: Game Reserves Open, Close
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Visitors to Corbett and Rajaji national parks got a surprise when they arrived for the annual reopening of the famed tiger reserves Nov. 15: both were shut down by forest guards striking for higher wages. These national parks reopen each year on Nov. 15 following monsoon season, but this year the strike closed them for two days until the government agreed to consider to the rangers’ demands. The story was different for Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, which a government official ordered closed because of inadequate ranger staffing. Of the five positions, three are unfilled and one is on leave for three months, meaning only one ranger is currently on staff for the entire reserve. When staffing is sorted out the park will reopen. Officials vowed to solve the issue within days.
