Ireland: New Law Bans Begging

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 26th, 2008 | Trackback

A new law to control aggressive begging will go into effect in a few months now that the government has approved the terms of the bill. The law is the first on the issue since the British outlawed begging in 1847 during Ireland’s infamous famine caused by potato blight. That law was ruled unconstitutional in 2006 and the new law is an effort to control professional begging gangs that force children onto the streets to seek handouts. The law carries a maximum fine of 700 euros ($908) and a month in jail.
