Latvia: Scams Common in Riga’s Clubs, Bars
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The U.S. Embassy in Riga warned Americans about crime against foreigners in Riga’s bars, clubs and lounges. Numerous incidents have occurred in which foreign tourists were charged extortionate prices for drinks, with some being assaulted, threatened or forced to withdraw money from ATMs to pay their bills. Local police have been unable or unwilling to assist victims, some of whom believe the police were involved in the scams. Accordingly, the U.S. Embassy has a long list of establishments that it has placed off-limits for U.S. staff and family members. These bars “have become notorious for credit card fraud extortion scams, prostitution rings and violence by organized criminals,” according to the Embassy’s statement. Many of the problem establishments are in the Old Town and include Foxy Lounge—Terbatas 2; Roxy Klub—Kalku 24; Lord’s Pub (formerly Groks Pub)—Kalku 22; Puzzle (formerly Pink Panther)—Kalku 22; Zephyr Bar—located near Galleria Center near the youth hostel; and Nobu Sushi—Grecinieku 28.
