Nicaragua: Disputed Election Unrest Continues

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 20th, 2008 | Trackback

Unrest over the Nov. 9 local elections that the opposition claims were marred by irregularities continued to plague Nicaragua. Thousands of Sandinista party supporters flocked into the streets of Managua Nov. 18 to prevent an opposition march, blocking roads and clashing with opposition members. Young Sandinista partisans were bused in from around the country and some were reportedly brought in from El Salvador, armed with bats, rocks, machetes and guns. The Sandinista supporters blocked all of the downtown intersections and attacked opposition members when they tried to leave the area. The trouble wasn’t confined to Managua: unrest in Leon forced Cal Ripken Jr. to cancel a youth baseball clinic he was planning to hold because violence in the city would have prevented the children from attending.
