Thailand: Anti-Government Protesters Shut Down Bangkok’s International Airport

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | November 26th, 2008 | Trackback

The four-month effort to bring down the prime minister escalated into a serious crisis in recent days with protesters taking over Bangkok’s international airport and causing the cancellation of all flights in or out of the capital city on Nov. 26. A day earlier clashes between government supporters and anti-government demonstrators erupted with gunfire. Police said 11 government supporters were injured, some with gunshot wounds. The anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy vowed to keep the airport shut down until the prime minister resigned. Thousands of travelers were stranded in Bangkok and elsewhere around the world.
