Thailand: Fake Monks Dupe Tourists

Buddhist monks making their morning alms rounds represent an essential part of Thai culture, but increasingly con artists posing as monks are asking for and receiving money from unsuspecting foreign tourists. Such incidents are becoming especially common in Bangkok’s Khao San Road tourist district. A sure way to avoid being conned is never to give money to monks. Real monks do not ask for money and usually do not approach foreigners: they receive their alms in the form of food from Thais.
