Venezuela: Elections Could Produce Unrest
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |State and local elections on Sunday, Nov. 23 could produce several defeats for President Hugo Chavez’s candidates and violence is possible in the days that follow. Chavez threatened to use force to defend the election results, to cut off national funds to states where opposition candidates win the vote, and to shut down TV stations that broadcast early election results. Opposition leaders believe Chavez’s angry rhetoric and other acts of intimidation reflect his concern over growing discontent with his rule. In other news, police announced the arrest of three fishermen in the Nov. 8 shooting death of an American yachtsman in Mochimo National Park, a marine sanctuary off Venezuela’s northeast coast.
