China: Taxi Strikes Hit Several Cities
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Taxi drivers went on strike in the southern city of Chaozhou Nov. 29 protesting the government’s failure to crack down on unlicensed taxis. The strike followed similar actions in Chongqing and Sanya where angry demonstrators damaged almost three dozen vehicles, including police cars. In Guangzhou, some 100 drivers threw bricks at unlicensed taxis. High fuel prices and rising rental fees have also angered the drivers. Concessions won by cabbies in Chongqing may have emboldened drivers in other cities, and further strikes are possible.
