Egypt, Israel: Bus Crashes Kill Scores

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | December 18th, 2008 | Trackback

A crowded bus crashed into an irrigation canal Dec. 14, killing 57 people. The bus swerved to avoid an oncoming truck on a narrow road near the city of Minya, about 130 miles south of Cairo. Poor road conditions and reckless driving have given Egypt a history of serious road accidents, with some 8,000 people killed in 2006. Such incidents can happen anywhere, however. Just two days later a bus full of Russian tourists crashed into a ravine in Israel near the Sinai Desert border north of the Red Sea resort of Eilat. Some 24 people died in Israel’s worst accident in many years.
