Greece: Riots, Strike Hit Athens
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Five days of rioting occurred in Athens and other cities after the shooting death of an Athens teenager by police Dec. 6. The violence was the worst Greece has seen in decades and the shooting may have been a catalyst for releasing pent up anger at the conservative government and its policies. A long-planned 24-hour general strike further disrupted Athens Dec. 10 with additional violence and caused the closure of the international airport.
