Thailand: Airport Protests End, Flights Resume
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |The months-long protests in Bangkok demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat should end now that the Constitutional Court has dissolved the top three ruling parties over fraud in the 2007 elections that brought them to power, effectively dissolving the government. The protests culminated in demonstrators shutting down Bangkok’s two major airports for more than a week, stranding some 300,000 passengers and disrupting air travel all over the world. Demonstrators ended their occupation of the airport Dec. 3 and authorities expected airport operations to resume in full by Dec. 5. Whether those who pick up the reins of power move the government in a different direction remains to be seen.
