Cambodia: Malaria Diminishing, but Drug-Resistant Strain Increasing
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Efforts to control malaria in Cambodia have shown great success, reducing the number of cases from 100,000 in 2006 to 54,000 in 2008 and cutting the death rate in half, from 396 in 2006 to 184 in 2008. A drug-resistant strain is developing along the Thai-Cambodia border, however, that health authorities and WHO hope to combat by introducing a new combination drug therapy. The success of the anti-malaria campaign can be attributed to drug therapies, public education and use of simple tools such as mosquito nets. The long term strategy is to eradicate malaria; the best short term strategy for avoiding the disease is via drug regimen and preventing mosquito bites.
