China: 2009 Could Bring Unrest from Rural Migrants, University Students
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Prospects for a wave of protests and riots around the country in 2009 are high, according to a magazine report published by China’s official Xinhua news agency. The story in Outlook Magazine warned that a sharp economic downturn could create anger among millions of migrant workers and university graduates who will be unable to find work, putting pressure on both the government to find a solution and on cities to manage the discontent. Unrest has been rising in recent years in rural areas and some cities that have not benefited dramatically from the economic boom. June 2009 is also the 20th anniversary of the crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square, protests largely driven by discontented university students, and the anniversary could produce new demands for democratic reforms.
