China: Lunar New Year to See World’s Largest Human Migration

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | January 15th, 2009 | Trackback

The world’s biggest human migration is about to occur as Chinese workers and students prepare to return to their home provinces during the Golden Week holiday for Lunar New Year that begins Jan. 26. Trains throughout the country will be jammed with riders, many standing for journeys that can take several days. Officials expect 188 million people to travel by train during the month-long travel period surrounding the holiday, and Chinese airlines expect to carry more than 24 million passengers. Last year’s holiday was disrupted by disastrous winter weather that blocked millions from returning home, making this year’s festival all the more significant.
