Australia: Fires and Floods Devastate Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Extreme weather conditions have made Australia appear to be experiencing crises of Biblical proportions, with devastating fires followed by overwhelming floods. The fires in Victoria state scorched a parched landscape that has seen little rain, with the capital Melbourne about to break an 1893 record for the least rain through February. Communities north of Sydney, on the other hand, were inundated by floodwaters, with the Bourke region of New South Wales declared a disaster area. And much of Queensland has been under water for weeks with the worst flooding in 30 years and more rain on the way.
