Belize: Unrest in Orange Walk Blocks Roads

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | February 5th, 2009 | Trackback

Labor unrest in the Orange Walk area blocked roads, including the Northern Highway at the toll bridge to Orange Walk. There were reports of gun violence. Travel in the area will be disrupted until the situation calms down. Orange Walk is an area of northwestern Belize bordering Mexico and Guatemala, inhabited primarily by Maya mestizo descendants of Mexican refugees from the 1840 Caste War. It is home to the Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area, the largest land conservation area in Belize.
