Madagascar: Political Crisis Continues
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A political crisis between the president and the former mayor of Antananarivo continued, with a curfew remaining in effect in the capital city from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. The crisis has lasted more than a month and seen some 100 people killed in street violence and clashes with security forces. Commercial airlines continue to fly in and out of the country but on a reduced schedule. The opposing parties have met three times in the past few days and vowed to reduce tensions as they seek a solution. Meanwhile, the tourism industry is facing ruin as hotel occupancy plummets and tours are canceled.
