Australia: Oil Spill Causes Queensland Emergency

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | March 18th, 2009 | Trackback

Queensland’s worst oil spill in decades has turned 40 miles of coastline into a disaster area, with the beaches along the popular Sunshine Coast, Moreton and Bribie islands the worst hit. A cargo ship registered in Hong Kong was thought to have leaked 30 tons of oil in stormy weather March 11 when 31 containers of ammonium nitrate fertilizer were hurled from the deck and punctured the hull. The oil has washed up on beaches and authorities worry that the fertilizer could also cause algal blooms that would suffocate fish and damage habitat. Moreton and Bribie islands are national parks that host seabirds and varied marine life.
