Egypt: Series of Violent Incidents in Cairo
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Five days after a French teenager was killed in a bomb blast at Cairo’s Khan el-Khalili bazaar, an American teacher suffered cuts to the face when a deranged man attacked him in the same bazaar. The attacker told police he hated foreigners and was angry about Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip. Initial reports revealed that he had been in a mental institution in 2000 for attacking tourists and policemen. He remained in custody. Another incident occurred Feb. 28 when a man tossed a homemade firebomb that failed to ignite into a Cairo Metro station. No one was injured. This series of incidents suggests that visitors should be especially cautious when in crowded places and at popular tourist sites.
