Guadeloupe and Martinique: Strikes Settled, Returning to Normal

After six weeks of labor unrest on Guadeloupe, the French government and labor leaders signed an agreement March 5 to end the general strike. The deal provides for pay increases to be borne by both the government and private employers. Businesses reopened and the situation is returning to normal. On neighboring Martinique, a month-long strike ended March 11 when union leaders and employers signed a similar agreement. Roadblocks were being dismantled and schools and businesses were to reopen within 48 hours.
