Guatemala: Highway Robberies Affect Tourists

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | March 12th, 2009 | Trackback

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City received reports of two incidents of armed robbers holding up tourist buses in February. In both cases, private buses were boarded by at least five armed men and the tourists were robbed of cash, electronics and other valuables. One incident occurred on CA-1 in Totonicapan on a bus en route to Panajachel; the other robbery took place on CA-2 in Santa Rosa on a bus traveling to Antigua from San Salvador. The level of violent crime in Guatemala remains high. The police force is inexperienced, underfunded and inefficient, and criminals know there is little chance that they will be caught or jailed.
