Japan: Increase in Drink-Spiking in Tokyo’s Roppongi Bars

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | 1 comment | March 18th, 2009 | Trackback

The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo issued a notice March 17 citing a significant increase in drink spiking in Tokyo’s Roppongi bars and clubs. Perpetrators slip a drug into drinks that renders victims unconscious for several hours while the criminals charge large sums of money to victims’ credit cards. Sometimes victims wake in the club, sometimes in the street. The Embassy recommends that personnel avoid drinking in this area, but anyone who chooses to participate in Roppongi nightlife should be extremely vigilant and aware of their surroundings. The highest level of reported incidents have occurred in the area of Roppongi Intersection, Roppongi-dori and Gaien Higashi-dori.
