Madagascar: Political Crisis Brings Down President
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |A political crisis that started in January and devolved to daily clashes between opposition and government supporters in the capital city, Antananarivo, led to a mutiny by some factions of the army and the deposing of the army chief. On March 16 the president, who had been elected to a second term in 2006, was forced to resign and the renegade army established his rival as head of a transitional government, actions that run counter to the country’s constitution. Looting and other criminality increased dramatically during the unrest and more trouble is possible as the deposed president’s supporters decide how to respond. Many diplomatic and aid organization personnel have evacuated, and tourism in the country has imploded.
