Argentina: Dengue Fever Cases Appear in Buenos Aires

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 1st, 2009 | Trackback

Sixty cases of dengue fever have been detected in Greater Buenos Aires, but health authorities reported that all of those cases were contracted outside the region. Some 3,000 dengue cases have been recorded in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy near Bolivia and in Chaco province bordering Paraguay, while officials in those provinces say the number is actually much higher. The spread of the disease into Argentina is primarily blamed on the epidemic in Bolivia, where some 50,000 cases have been reported. Authorities in Greater Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires province have implemented mosquito-eradication plans including spraying insecticide to eliminate the disease carriers. The only sure way to avoid dengue fever is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
