Egypt: Hezbollah Threat to Israeli Tourists in Sinai?

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 15th, 2009 | Trackback

Authorities found explosives and bomb-making materials they said had been smuggled into Egypt by Hezbollah agents to use against Israeli tourists in southern Sinai resorts. The announcement came after repeated warnings by Israeli authorities for Israelis to avoid resorts in Sinai for fear of such attacks. A Hezbollah spokesman acknowledged that one of its agents had smuggled in the materials but said they were intended for attacks against Israel, not tourists in the Sinai. The incident reflects on ongoing hostility between Egypt and Hezbollah. In an unrelated incident, an Israeli tourist sleeping in a beach hut at Nuweiba was slashed in an attempted robbery inside his hut. The victim gave chase but the intruder escaped.
