India’s Elections Under Way, Security Tight

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 30th, 2009 | Trackback

India’s staggered parliamentary elections are under way through May 13. Security is tight throughout the country as authorities work to prevent violence related to the election or from extremist groups trying to take advantage of the masses of people gathering at polling areas. It is prudent during this time for travelers to avoid large gatherings at polling places and elsewhere. Remaining election dates are: May 7 for Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal; and May 13 for Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Puducherry, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
