Jamaica: Attempted Hijacking Has Authorities Looking for Answers

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 22nd, 2009 | Trackback

Authorities are investigating how airport security was breached by a young gunman who took control of a Canadian charter aircraft at Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport April 19. He held six crew hostage for almost eight hours before being disarmed and arrested without injury or loss of life. Jamaica’s prime minister was at the airport for most of the ordeal, drawing support but also light criticism from the local press because several murders in the preceding days did not find the prime minister arriving at the crime scene. Tourism is a mainstay of the island’s economy and a safe and speedy resolution of the hijacking was necessary to avoid damaging the industry.
