Thailand: Emergency Lifted but Protests May Resume

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | April 30th, 2009 | Trackback

The prime minister lifted the state of emergency he put in place April 12 to quell protests that became violent, saying the country had returned to normal. A few hours later, the leader of the demonstrations that prompted the emergency called for another protest, but a peaceful one this time. The court released three other leaders of the “red shirt” protesters on condition they remain in the country and do not instigate further violence. Political tensions may continue to simmer while ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra remains at large in exile avoiding a corruption conviction.
