France and Spain: ETA Threatens Violence before Summer

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | May 27th, 2009 | Trackback

In an interview with a Basque newspaper, two members of the Basque separatist group ETA threatened a campaign of violence before the summer. One was quoted as saying ETA would attack tourists and Britons seeking second homes in southwestern France’s Basque region, claiming the outsiders were destroying the region’s culture and heritage. Two years ago a famous French chef was forced to leave his restaurant near Biarritz because of a series of bombings, and isolated attacks on summer homes of non-Basques have occurred in the area. In Spain, in recent years ETA has carried out bombings at popular seaside resorts, so their threats of violence cannot be dismissed, despite a general weakening of the group through cooperative efforts by French and Spanish police.
