Nepal: Political Crisis Follows PM’s Resignation

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | May 6th, 2009 | Trackback

Nepal fell into a political crisis when Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the former Maoist guerrilla leader, resigned to protest the president’s refusal to fire the army chief. Dahal wanted the army head fired because he refused to integrate Maoist rebels into the army. Dahal’s resignation caused the government to fall, and the president set a May 9 deadline for parties to form a new government. If they fail to do so, the interim constitution requires that parliament elect a prime minister. Maoists vowed to take to the streets to protest what they consider their ousting by the opposition, and a crowd of some 1,000 demonstrators clashed with police May 6 in Kathmandu.
