Cambodia: Angkor Wat May Remain Open at Night

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 3rd, 2009 | Trackback

Authorities are considering opening Angkor Wat at night to draw more tourists. Lighting the expansive archaeological site would allow visitors to remain as late as 8:30, while now they must leave at sunset. Cambodia is expecting more than a million foreign tourists this year with more than half visiting the Angkor temples. The country needs the revenue, but conservationists are concerned about the impact on the ancient site from increased tourism, especially the pumping of underground water to serve the town of Siem Reap, which may be undermining the temples.
