Mexico: Airline Grounded, then Flying Again; Shootout in Acapulco

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | June 10th, 2009 | Trackback

The government grounded Aviacsa airlines, Mexico’s third-oldest air carrier, June 3 citing safety concerns, which the airline denied. But a court order reversed the shutdown and the airline resumed flights June 6. The government planned to appeal the decision, and if it wins an appeal the carrier could be grounded again. Aviacsa flies to 17 Mexican cities and Las Vegas. In other news, Acapulco was the scene of two violent incidents involving drug gangs and security forces. One of the incidents, a shootout with the Mexican army, occurred in a tourist district that was a favorite of Hollywood stars during the 1950s but hosts mostly Mexican tourists now. The other incident took place less than 48 hours later when gunmen launched grenades and opened fire on two police stations. Thirteen drug traffickers, two soldiers and two bystanders died in the shootout with the army.
