Zambia: Power Problems Put Nation in the Dark

The entire country suffered blackouts over a two-week period, first when Zesco, the national power company, shut down two of its six generators at the Kafue Gorge hydropower station when a massive accumulation of weeds blocked the water flow, then June 15 when a substation that provides Zambia’s main power supply failed. Workers restored power after almost two days but load shedding could occur as it did for several days after the May 3 nationwide blackout.
