England: Increased Security on the Thames
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |London’s Daily Star reported that authorities increased security on the Thames in London in response to possible threats to the city’s landmarks, including such tourist favorites as the London Eye and Houses of Parliament, whose most prominent symbol is Big Ben. Security officials identified more than 100 vulnerable sites and tightened security on the river following the Nov. 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai in which the attackers used boats to get into the city. Security patrols have increased searches of boats on the Thames looking for weapons and suspicious packages. Their other duties include raiding vessels suspected of carrying drugs, and generally keeping order.
