Germany: Berlin Railway Service Disrupted Until December

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 22nd, 2009 | Trackback

A cracked wheel that caused a derailment in May has disrupted train service in and around Berlin. National railway authorities removed from the system all trains whose wheels had not been inspected, and because so many cars need to be checked the situation could last for months, with full service restored by December. Trains have been overcrowded, platforms jammed, service curtailed, canceled, or delayed. Until early August there will be no service between Berlin’s Ostbahnhof and Zoo station, two major hubs. These closures could create serious congestion in the city center. Berlin is the third most visited city in Europe behind Paris and London.
