Italy: Rome Restaurant Swindles Tourists, Gets Shut Down
By Larry Habegger | Permalink |Tourists being overcharged by restaurants in Rome is nothing new, but the case of a Japanese couple who were charged almost $1,000 for lunch at the Passetto restaurant produced an unusual result: authorities shut the place down. Officials compared menu prices against charges on the receipt, found dramatic differences, and also uncovered health violations in the kitchen. The closure was temporary, but authorities were considering revoking the restaurant’s license. The lesson here is to be sure to read the menu (the Japanese couple never saw one) and not to let the waiters decide what to serve you. Passetto restaurant is at Piazza Navona and has served celebrities past and present during its 100 years of operation.
