Italy: Vigilante Patrols Widespread in Italy

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | July 22nd, 2009 | Trackback

Vigilante “citizen patrols” have become widespread in Italy, with different groups forming in different cities and many affiliated with political groups. Since July 8 they have received the sanction of the national government, which passed a law legalizing such organizations as part of an anti-crime bill. Some, such as the “Italian National Guard,” espouse far-right ideology, while others lean far left and still more are as benign as seniors supervising streets outside schools. There are also groups that include immigrants in response to right-wing anti-immigrant rhetoric. The vigilante groups originated in the 1990s, with one, the City Angels, patrolling Italian cities since 1994. Now there are about 100 such groups throughout the country.
