Italy: Vandals Pollute Capri’s Blue Grotto

By Larry Habegger | Permalink | No Comments | August 27th, 2009 | Trackback

Authorities closed Capri’s famous Blue Grotto for the second time in a week after reports of foam and a stench in the popular sea cave. On Aug. 20 officials arrested two men who were pumping raw sewage into the grotto from a tanker truck that collected cesspool sewage from local homes. Within days the sewage was washed away by ocean currents but an unusual white foam and stench returned. Authorities were testing the waters to see if the pollution was related to the Aug. 20 dumping or came from another source. Whether the suspects were deliberately sabotaging the Blue Grotto or simply illegally dumping waste is uncertain. Prosecutors were also investigating the dumping of sewage in May on the island of Ischia near Naples.
