Mauritania: Concerns about Possible Attack During Ramadan

The U.S. State Department warned that the al-Qaeda affiliated group al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) may conduct attacks on U.S. citizens during the holy month of Ramadan, which is now under way. The announcement said that U.S. government officials and Americans working for faith-based organizations may be particularly targeted, and encouraged all travelers to remain especially aware of their surroundings during Ramadan. The U.S. Mission continued to advise personnel to avoid non-essential travel outside Nouakchott and to avoid places where foreigners gather or large cultural events without visible security officers.
